Matching the Service to the Shipment
One of the easiest ways to control freight costs is to choose the right trailer service. Sending a half-empty full load wastes money, while squeezing an oversized shipment into groupage can cause handling problems. Here is how the three options compare.
Groupage (Less Than Truck Load)
With groupage, several customers' goods share the same trailer. You only pay for the space your cargo occupies, which makes it the most economical choice for smaller shipments. The trade-off is that consolidated loads may involve additional handling and slightly longer transit while the trailer is filled.
Part Load
Part load sits between groupage and full load. It suits medium-sized consignments that take up a meaningful portion of a trailer but do not need the whole thing. You get more dedicated space and often faster handling than groupage.
Full Load (Full Truck Load)
A full load dedicates an entire trailer to your cargo. It is the fastest and most secure option, with no consolidation delays and direct point-to-point movement. For large volumes, it is frequently the best value per unit shipped.
Which One Is Right for You?
- Small shipment, flexible timing: groupage
- Medium volume, balanced speed and cost: part load
- Large volume or time-sensitive: full load
